Origins and Early Years

1924: The MG brand was officially established by Cecil Kimber, the manager of Morris Garages, a dealer of Morris cars in Oxford, which dealt in sales and service.

The name “MG” stands for Morris Garages.

Kimber saw an opportunity to modify Morris cars, making them faster and more stylish, catering to a growing interest in automobiles that offered performance and distinction.

During the period of 1924-1929 the early MGs were essentially Morris cars that had been modified for higher performance.

The first cars were called the MG 14/28 and the MG 14/40, and they featured sporty bodywork on the Morris Oxford chassis. The brand quickly gained a reputation for producing attractive and fast vehicles.

Growth and Iconic Models

1930s: MG established itself with the production of iconic models such as the MG M-type Midget. The company moved to a larger facility in Abingdon, Oxfordshire, which became synonymous with the MG brand for many decades.

During the 1930s also saw the launch of the T-Series, beginning with the TA, which became incredibly popular, especially in the United States, laying down the foundation for the brand’s international success.

Post-War Era and Expanding Legacy

After World War II, MG continued to innovate, launching models such as the MG TC. This range was almost exclusively exported to the United States, bolstering MG’s reputation abroad.

Earlier in the 1950s and 1960s saw the introduction of the MG A and MG B, arguably some of the most iconic sports cars of their time. The MG B, in particular, enjoyed a long production run from 1962 to 1980 and became one of the best-selling sports cars in the world.

Transition and Challenges

1980s-1990s: The MG brand faced challenges, including changes in ownership and a hiatus in sports car production.

The brand eventually joined the British Leyland Motor Corporation (BLMC), which later evolved into the Rover Group.

During this period, the MG badge was used on a range of vehicles, including saloons and hatchbacks, but these did not capture the spirit of the original MG sports cars.

Revival and Modern Era

Following several changes in ownership, the MG brand was successfully acquired by the Chinese automotive company SAIC Motor Corporation Limited in the early 21st century.

Under new ownership, MG has undergone a brand revival, expanding its line up to include not just sports cars but also SUVs and electric vehicles, aiming to combine its legacy of British design and sporting heritage with modern technology and trends.

Internally there is no compromise on technology with a 10.5-inch floating infotainment screen, adaptive cruise control and LED headlights that come as standard on the Trophy models.

If you thought that style was a compromise with an electric vehicle, then this MG could be the car that changes your mind to consider zero emissions.

This recent Top Gear review sums up the MG4 nicely

“The MG4 brings range, equipment, zippy dynamics and style to the small electric car party.
