BYD

Chinese EV

Tesla has long been the dominant force in the world of electric vehicles. However, its reign may be coming to an end as a new challenger emerges. In China, the world’s largest EV market, domestic automakers like BYD pose a serious threat. A fierce price and tariff war has ignited an already competitive market, and Tesla’s days as the top dog could be numbered.

The one carmaker in particular that has given Tesla a run for its money is BYD. The Chinese automaker reportedly had over 2.4 million new car registrations in 2023, making it the top brand in China with a market share of 11%.

BYD’s meteoric rise in 2023, marked by its production of over 3 million new vehicles, including plug-in hybrids and battery electrics, has surpassed Tesla’s production of 1.84 million cars. This significant achievement underscores not only BYD’s potential but also its ability to compete on a global scale, signalling a rapid shift in the industry landscape.

Growing Influence

Once underestimated by its rivals, BYD has emerged as a serious contender. The majority of the market share in China, once held by foreign brands, is now dominated by Chinese OEM brands. These brands are known for their high-quality vehicles, a testament to the rapid evolution of the Chinese automotive industry. With ambitious plans to expand globally to over 70 countries, BYD is not only dominating the Chinese market but also posing a significant challenge to other global players, showcasing its growing influence on the global automotive industry.

So, Where has BYD come from

BYD, an acronym for ‘build your dreams,’ was established in 1995 in Shenzhen, China. Initially, the company focused on manufacturing cell phone batteries, leveraging competitive pricing to undercut the competition. After establishing a successful business supplying customers such as Motorola and Nokia, BYD made a strategic decision to enter the auto industry. This move, which was a significant shift in its business model, has not only impacted the global automotive market but also demonstrated BYD’s strategic foresight and adaptability.

Launching its first internal combustion car in 2005, the F3, a mediocre commuter car powered by a Mitsubishi engine, in 2010, it unveiled its first fully electric vehicle, the E6, mainly sold locally for Taxis.

Despite facing challenges, BYD’s auto division, BYD Cars, has demonstrated remarkable resilience and potential for growth. The company’s sales in Europe were declining until recently, leading to doubts about its future as a car company. However, BYD managed to turn things around in 2019, primarily through strategic partnerships and innovative product launches. This turnaround not only showcased BYD’s ability to overcome obstacles but also inspired confidence in its potential for growth and innovation.

The BYD Automotive Design Centre, established in 2019, was a significant milestone for the company. Led by German designer Wolfgang Egger and a team of industry veterans from Audi, Ferrari, and Mercedes Benz, the centre was responsible for designing the BYD E-Seed GT concept car that would eventually become the BYD Han EV. This strategic investment in design and innovation not only enhanced the quality and appeal of BYD’s products but also demonstrated its commitment to global competitiveness.

World-Class Designers

These world-class designers created some good-looking cars. In addition to the Han EV, BYD manufactures and exports the entry-level EVs Dolphin and Chazor, a four-door saloon, and Song Plus DM-I, an SUV, both advanced plug-in hybrids. Four other models are predominantly available for the Caucasus, Middle East, and Asian markets; they have recently extended the availability of all eight models to South America.

In BYD 2022, the company stopped production of its ICE vehicles, focusing on building battery electric and plug-in hybrids. The majority of their cars are in the mass market, so that helps with volume, and they’ve also not completely super to pure electric vehicles at once

BYD  designs, develops, and engineers its own batteries at scale. This not only gives them the capability and capacity for their own products but also allows them to supply batteries globally.

BYD’s DNA is that manufacturing LFP batteries costs 30 to 40% less per kWh. They are also extremely durable and last a long time.

As a leader in battery technology, BYD supplies batteries to other car makers like Tesla, Toyota, and Kia, instilling confidence in its product quality.

BYD technologies include the e-Platform 3.0 with integrated lithium iron phosphate Blade Battery, an ultra-safe car battery with a range of 620 miles, software intelligence, and compact size. Recently, BYD Auto partnered with NVIDIA DRIVE™  to introduce the most advanced programmable automotive-grade processor, acknowledging future autonomous driving ambitions.
