Newcastle is the largest city in North East England. Its history dates back to Roman times when a settlement was established near Hadrian's Wall. The settlement was later renamed after a new castle was constructed by Robert Curthose, the oldest son of William the Conqueror, in 1080.

The city's economy today has become varied and includes significant contributions from science, finance, retail, education, and tourism. The nightlife scene is lively, especially around the Bigg Market, China Town, and Collingwood Street, which offer many bars, clubs, and pubs.

The A1 (Newcastle Gateshead Western Bypass) is one of the primary roads in this area. It runs north to Edinburgh, south to the UK motorway network, and ultimately to London.

The A19 road is a significant route in the North East that runs parallel to the A1 road, connecting Sunderland and Middlesbrough to York and Doncaster. It serves as an essential commuter road.

A brand new three-level circular junction can now be found at Silverlink on the A19, running underneath the A1058 Coast Road and roundabout, ensuring smooth traffic flow. The latest addition also features new junction bridges, slip roads, and two footbridges spanning the A1058 to accommodate pedestrians and cyclists.

The A69 heads west to Carlisle; the A696, which becomes the A68, heads past Newcastle Airport and up through central Northumberland and Scottish Borders. The A69 road also runs alongside the B6318, which is the access to Hadrian's Wall.

There are two other main roads in the area. The first A167, called the "Great North Road, " goes south towards Gateshead, historic Chester-Le-Street, Durham, and Darlington. The second road, A1058, is known as the "Coast Road", and it runs from the fashionable Jesmond to the east coast, between Tynemouth and Cullercoats Bay.

Once in Newcastle, a busy city centre awaits, and its one-way system can be particularly tough on some of the city's busiest roads, from rush-hour traffic to bus lane no-go areas.

Newcastle is famous for its iconic bridges, and the Tyne Bridge is a true gem. While enjoying the breathtaking views, it's important to consider any height or weight restrictions. The A167 provides two lanes in each direction for crossing over the Tyne Bridge. However, traffic can be quite congested, especially when heading south.

In May 2022, Newcastle Council introduced a low-emission zone. But this is for an introductory period of two years, and it will be enforced from June 2024.
