Driving tips for Plymouth

Plymouth is a lively city on the southern coast of Devon, England. Known as the “Ocean City”, It is approximately 36 miles southwest of Exeter and 193 miles southwest of London. The city is adjacent to Cornwall on its western and southwestern borders.

Plymouth is renowned for its fascinating maritime history, breathtaking coastal views, and lively cultural scene, providing tourists with many things to see and do.

The city of Plymouth has been greatly influenced by its relationship with the sea, trade, and warfare, particularly evident in the historic Barbican area. This charming old port features narrow cobbled streets, well-preserved Elizabethan warehouses, unique speciality shops, art galleries, cosy cafes, and restaurants.

Driving through Plymouth offers a mix of experiences depending on the time of day, traffic conditions, and weather. Plymouth has a comprehensive network of major roads and smaller residential streets. The A386 and A374 are the primary routes within the city.

The city is connected to the rest of the country via the A38 dual carriageway, which runs through the city and connects to the M5 motorway. Because there is only way into Plymouth by road if you're coming from anywhere other than Cornwall, Tavistock or Modbury that's on the A38, and when that is shut or blocked, it can lead to long delays.

Navigating the main roads is relatively straightforward, but some smaller streets can be narrow and winding. With Plymouth being a coastal city, the weather can be a factor in influencing your journey.
