Lexus RZ

Lexus RZ in a nutshell

THE RZ 450E IS A GREAT ALL-ELECTRIC SUV

The contract hire Lexus RZ - or the RZ 450e to give it its full name - has been created from the ground up and is the firm's first bespoke battery-powered offering, and it's a cracker. The RZ is packed with technology, has great handling and is a refined and stylish car.

ELECTRIC POWERTRAIN AND PERFORMANCE FOR THE LEXUS RZ

While the Lexus RZ 450e is a bespoke all-electric car, it shares the same underpinnings as the Toyota bZ4X - which is also an impressive EV.

The 450e has a 71.4kWh battery to offer a range of up to 250 miles.

There's plenty of power, delivered instantly, with an electric motor mounted on the front axle producing 201 bhp, while a rear drive motor offers 108 bhp, so the combined output is 309 bhp.

This new model has all-wheel drive, there won't be a two-wheel drive version available, and delivers a quick sprint from a standing start.

This will see the 450e sprinting to 62 mph in just 5.6 seconds which is helped by the mighty torque figure of 435Nm.

The battery's range is boosted with four modes for brake regeneration, and most will offer one-pedal driving.

EQUIPMENT AND HANDLING

The Lexus RZ 450e car lease model is entering a competitive segment. Still, there's enough to attract anyone wanting a middle-sized SUV to impress first-hand.

Firstly, there's the firm's optional steer-by-wire technology, One Motion Grip, which means no connection between the wheels and the steering wheel.

Lexus has opted to use sensors that will interpret the driver's input. This information is electronically relayed to a motor fitted to the steering rack, which will turn the wheels.

It sounds strange, and it also means there's no conventional steering wheel, with drivers using a butterfly-shaped steering yolk. Even when turning with full lock, there's no need to cross your arms as the system gives a good reaction and is intuitive and natural to use.

This means that manoeuvrability, particularly at low speeds, is made easier using the yolk – but Lexus also offers a standard steering wheel.

The other noticeable feature of the new EV is that Lexus is renowned for offering a quiet and comfortable cabin - being completely battery-powered enhances this further.

With the batteries mounted low, the chassis offers a supple ride with a good grip when cornering. With DC charging at 150 kW, the battery can be recharged to 80% of its capacity in less than 30 minutes.

As expected from Lexus, the RZ 450e's interior has been well-designed and packed with premium technology and materials. There's a 14.0-inch display that sits on a low-set dashboard with features including voice control, a cloud-based satnav and smartphone compatibility. There are over-the-air updates for the technology.

This is also a spacious EV to spend time in, particularly for those sitting in the rear seats, and the optional panoramic sunroof let's plenty of light in. And it's worth noting that the sunroof has a coating to help reduce the heat that is allowed into the car and is dimmable.

We also liked the layout of the digital instrument display, which is straightforward and easy to use - it's also obviously designed for the low-topped yolk steering, so take note!

The other big difference for the Lexus RZ 450e is that the seating position is lower than, for example, the NX, but there's more space in the cabin.

There is also plenty of safety kit, including a blind spot monitoring system that will detect whether cyclists or vehicles are approaching when opening the doors.

Lexus has sought to bring a serious contender to the electric SUV segment. With its brand-new tech, practicality and luxury, we think they have done just that.
